The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has asked the Steamboat Springs Parks and Recreation Committee to continue discussions and studies to allow the club to build power and conditioning facilities on city property.

SSWSC will pay for the construction and maintenance of the facility, but Sarah Floyd, executive director of SSWSC, said the facility will also be open to other youth in the community, such as parks and recreational summer camps, and the boys and girls clubs in Northwest Colorado. As for the location of the facility, Freud proposed to build a pavilion at the foot of Mount Howersen, adjacent to the reverse slope of the Nordic jumping platform.

"We think this is more of a display facility," Freud said. "This will be heavily used by many groups, not just sports clubs."

The facility will include indoor trampolines and airbag ramp jumping.

"If we can teach young children excellently here, no matter what sport they are engaged in, it will be a basic motor skill," said Deputy Executive Director Jon Nolting (Jon Nolting). In addition to other community groups, Freud said the facility — which will be one of the only facilities of its kind in North America — can also be used by athletes in the Rocky Mountain area.

"One possibility is that this will become a regional training center for the American ski and snowboard team," said Dave Stewart, sports director of SSWSC. "It will definitely highlight the Olympic heritage for our community and attract a lot of attention in the region and across the country for other athletes to come and use."

Although the committee members supported the idea, several committee members wanted to ensure that the facility would reserve enough space for poor children, rather than crowded with children from families who can afford expensive sports.

"We will get there anyway," Stewart said. "We think this is indeed the youth and youth development part we serve, which will work well."

Stewart also said that the facility could be reserved exclusively by other sports groups in the community.

SSWSC currently uses a 1,350 square foot power and conditioning facility, which Nolting says is not big enough for a growing sports and growth club.

Freud said that the club has not yet begun to study the cost of the facility because she wants to wait for a formal agreement between the city government and the club, but SSWSC cannot provide funding alone.

Freud said: "This is not in our operating budget, so we will raise funds." He added that the club has received interest from potential donors.
